What are ISO certificates and what are they for? All its types and features

The certification of the different management systems is an upward trend among companies. They seek to enjoy the benefits of certification, which are vital for the reinforcement of the company’s business and management opportunities. Do you know the types of ISO certificates you can opt for?

Management Systems Certification

Certificates are documents that admit the truth of a fact. In this case that we deal with the ISO certification, they reliably guarantee that a certain ISO standard is complied with, that the standards are correctly implemented.

When a company has the relevant certifications, it differs from the competition of the same sector. These certificates are proof that we are facing a competent and reliable company, so your business volume will be positively affected.

Having ISO or other certificates allows companies to carry out more competitive and ambitious strategies. This makes society in general and, in particular, the economy benefit from this momentum.

Benefits of having certification

The benefits derived from having certified documents of ISO standards are seen in different areas: in the face of customers, within the company itself or in the market as a whole.

✦ Improved image projected towards customers and society as a whole.

✦ The productivity of your production process is increasing as it is oriented towards continuous improvement.

✦ Increased confidence in the company’s environment: customers, suppliers, public administrations.

✦ Simplification of decision making , both in the content and in the time devoted to this task.

✦ Companies that have the relevant certifications acquire the characteristic of a reliable and independent company.

✦ Increase in the volume of business derived from all the previous benefits and the prestige acquired by having the ISO certificate.

Types of ISO certificates and features

Depending on the needs of a company, you will be interested in getting certified in one standard or another. Although ISO certificates are the best known, there are many certifications in different fields. Those that are common to all companies, regardless of the market in which they operate, are the ones we will see next.

It must be remembered that the certificates of the family of ISO standards are completely voluntary, it is the companies that decide to obtain the titles of the ISO standard to demonstrate their adaptation to the needs and changes that arise in the markets. It is a way that they are more valued within their sector.

ISO Quality Management Certificates

ISO 9001 Certificate : the famous ISO 9001 standard is the one that deals with establishing the guidelines that a quality management system must comply with. This ISO 9000 family certificate guarantees that the company is committed to maintaining quality standards in accordance with the standard. In this way, your goods or services will have tests that certify the quality of production and a productive process oriented towards continuous improvement.

ISO Environmental Management Certificates

ISO 14001 Certificate: This certification guarantees the correct implementation of the Environmental Management System. Interest in caring for and respecting the environment has been increasing over the years due to the incidence of climate change. Having the ISO 14001 certificate demonstrates a company’s commitment to the environment, seeks to respect it and minimize the impact of its productive activity on it.

ISO 5001 Certificate: Despite being a somewhat less popular management system than the previous one, it is still a very relevant ISO regulation as well. The Energy Management System is key to ensuring that the company is making responsible use of energy during its production process while heading towards achieving energy efficiency .

ISO Certificates of Risks and Security

ISO 27001 Certificate: This standard refers to the Information Security Management Systems. Having this certificate ensures that safety negligence will not be committed and that all legal requirements arising from the manipulation of information are met.

ISO 22301 Certificate: it is guaranteed that the Business Continuity Management System is correctly implemented. By adopting this ISO standard, it is guaranteed that the company has identified the possible threats to which it is exposed and how to strengthen its own capacity. In this way, the probability that the integrity of the business is compromised and, if it is affected, that it knows how to react properly and minimizes the damages that can occur, is reduced. This is one of the certificates to measure the ISO quality that have shot the most in recent years due to the recent economic crisis.

ISO 39001 Certificate : refers to the measures that must be established to have the necessary security for road traffic. Having the certification in ISO 39001 shows the efforts made by the company and the interest it presents in reducing mortality on the road and in increasing road safety within the company.

It certified ISO 45001 (OHSAS 18001): the OHSAS 18001 standard is being updated, so soon it enters into force ISO 45001. This is one of the most popular certifications among companies, certifying compliance with standards of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System. The company guarantees with this certificate that the safety and health of its workers in the workplace is supervised and not left to chance.

Other ISO quality certificates: Integrated Management Systems

When a company starts the certification in different ISO standards, we are facing a model of integrated management systems . There are certain ISO standards that are fully compatible with each other and you can achieve certification integrated in a single process.

With this, what is achieved is a significant cost savings and, above all, in time to obtain the different ISO certificates. For example, the ISO 14001 certificate can be obtained in conjunction with the ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certificate with the integration of the three systems.

What are the companies that certify ISO?

Sometimes the term of ISO certifications is confusingly understood , this is due to the name of the entity that promulgates the standards to be met, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO by its name in English). The misunderstanding comes from believing that it is this body that issues the ISO certificates, but it is not so, it simply determines the standards of each standard. The issuance of certificates to measure ISO quality corresponds to other certification bodies outside the ISO organization.

To achieve the ISO certifications, the operation is very simple. The interested company hires the services of a consultancy that will prepare everything necessary to access the ISO certificate. It is about studying the needs of the company, its business model, the branch of activity, the production process and other aspects related to the productive activity.

Once these issues have been identified, studies are carried out that allow their correct implementation within the company and the dissemination of the regulations to be applied among its employees. When the entire process is underway, before the audit by the accrediting entity, prior internal audits can be carried out to ensure total preparation before obtaining the ISO certificate. Once the ISO certificate has been obtained, the consultancy can carry out maintenance tasks so as not to neglect the implementation of the adopted standards, identify deviations from the standards and facilitate the approval of the audits carried out in order to renew the standard.

The certifying entities are responsible for carrying out the necessary procedures and audits to determine if the corresponding ISO certificate can be granted. These companies that issue the ISO certificates must be duly accredited for the exercise of their work. They are totally impartial and independent entities.

In Spain, the entity in charge of granting the ISO certificates is AENOR (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification), whose tasks include representing our country in ISO meetings where standards are debated and faithfully translating international ISO standards into our language .
